Some Information To Help You Buy Microscopes

If you are planning to buy microscopes, let me share a few things that may assist you in purchasing the right ones. There are many types of microscopes as you will find out once you start looking for one to buy. It is not possible to walk into a shop and pick up a microscope and walk out. You must know exactly what you are looking for or you may find yourself in turmoil. Once you know what type of microscope you want, what it is going to be used for and who is going to use it, you are ready to make your purchase.

The Purpose Of The Microscope

Who are you buying the microscope for? Is it going to be used in a laboratory for research work? Or do your school going children need it for their projects? Identifying the purpose of the microscope you are going to buy plays a large role in deciding what to buy. You will not need a very high end type of microscope if you are buying it for your children’s school projects. On the other hand if it is for use in a laboratory then you will have to buy microscopes which are very precise and give you around 1000 times total magnification.

You may not want to spend too much money and think of buying a plastic microscope. Well, let me discourage you from doing that. Even if it’s for a child, do not buy microscopes that are made of plastic as they will not last very long and are not very accurate. There are sturdy microscopes for beginners that you can buy for children. These are simple to use as they have larger controls. They don’t have very high magnification and usually have a single eyepiece to look at specimens. These microscopes can be bought at any store and are much more long lasting than plastic ones.

You can buy microscopes of two types. These are the stereo types and the compound types. The compound microscopes work using a single light path. You can get them with one or two eyepieces. They are very useful in viewing tiny specimens like cells. The magnification and resolution in this type is very high though depth perception may be low.

The stereo microscope works by using two different paths of light which gives you a 3-D vision of the specimen. They have a higher depth perception than the compound microscopes but lower resolution and magnification. These are more appropriate for viewing larger specimens like insects.

The type of light used in a microscope also differs. You get halogen, fluorescent and tungsten bulbs fitted on different microscopes. A microscope with a fluorescent bulb will cost more than the others. It is worth it because the light helps you see samples more clearly and it also emanates less heat.

You need to consider the types of lenses as well when you go to buy microscopes. There are different types like the achromatic, plan objective and semi-plan objective lenses. If you buy a microscope with a widefield eyepiece, it gives you a broader view of the specimen. This makes it easy for everyone to look though it, including children.

Once you have decided what you are looking for, you can go to any store and make your purchase. Once you are armed with information about microscopes, it will be much easier to buy microscopes for yourself.
