Need Advice On Buying Microscopes?

Buying microscopes is a hobby for many people. You may be interested in all types of microscopes or only antique ones. Whatever your interest may be, you can find something to suit your needs in many stores in your area or online. All microscopes are not very expensive so it has become much easier for collectors to expand their collection. Many companies are offering microscopes for quite a reasonable price. The antique ones are a little harder to find but not impossible. Many people have been restoring old microscopes and selling them for a good price.

When you think of buying microscopes make sure you know exactly what you are looking for. You could search online for what you want or go to a local shop. Searching online gives you a wider reach and you will be more likely to find what you want. So ask yourself if you want a modern microscope for home use or one for laboratory use? Or do you want an antique which you wish to preserve for the next generation?

If you are thinking of buying microscopes for your own personal use, do not think that cheap is the best. You may be misled into buying one of those plastic atrocities they call microscopes. They are just toy ones which even the kids would throw away in despair. Do not compromise on sturdiness and quality. Most of the modern microscopes are made of metal alloys which last long and don’t need much maintenance.

Types Of Microscopes

You can buy stereo or compound microscopes. A stereo microscope will give you a 3-D view of the specimen. It has two eyepieces like a pair of binoculars which makes it easy to look through. These are perfect for viewing larger specimens like leaves and insect wings as the magnification is not very high. A compound microscope on the other hand gives you a 2-D view and has a single eyepiece. The magnification and resolution of this type is much higher, it is useful for viewing tiny specimens like skin cells and pollen. If you are buying microscopes to use at home or at work, you should choose one of these types depending on what you want to see.

It is also important to get a microscope with fluorescent light for a clearer view as it is the brightest light you can have in a microscope. It is also a cool light and will not throw any heat on the specimen. This is better than other lights which could ruin the specimen with their heat.

If you are interested in antiques then you can find many in antique stores and online stores like e-bay. Most antique microscopes are made of solid brass and are quite heavy and sturdy. You’ll be surprised at how accurate many of them are and you can actually use them if you want. But an antique is a priceless possession, you have to care for it and keep it safe. Preserve it for the generations to come so that they can see where the modern day microscopes come from.

Buying microscopes may seem to be a difficult task for first-timers. But with the right kind of information, you can be sure of buying the one that is perfect for you. Whether you are buying for yourself or your kids, you should make sure you buy a good quality microscope which lasts long.
